Can we get TOO comfortable?

I remember a few years ago my grandmother was selling half of her farm and it included the house, to build on and move to the other half of their property. I was too young to understand why someone would do that. I didn't know finances could make life complicated and they needed the money. But when I asked her why? I remember specifically what she said, "because we never want to get too comfortable ". I remember that just sticking out in my mind as so odd, or not making any sense. My goal in life was just the opposite, to get as comfortable as I could. Have lots of fun, get lots of possessions, and experience lots of fun things. It was all about me that mattered the most. Not I reflect back at that, remembering what she said, and I believe I can understand slightly what she ment. That even something that huge in life as moving at that age shouldn't move your focus as to what matters most in life, "God". That should just be viewed as a small inconvenience in the path of life and we need to just move around it and keep going. There is no use of making a big deal about it.

The other, bigger thought I have is that if we have too many possessions, too many "pleasantries", too many fun experiences, we become like the "rich man" in the bible. And what man, having all the riches of his hearts desire, being in need of nothing, is going to want to walk the hard path of life and follow Jesus? what rich man, when the world is in need is going to want to part with any of his riches and bless someone who needs them more? What rich man is going to drop EVERYTHING that he loves so much and want to go home to be with Jesus in the end? You don't just magically stop loving all your possessions when you get old and your life is almost over. You don't just suddenly stop loving everything you have loved your entire life.

We need to always remember to keep God in our focus. Remember that we have needs in life and if they are met then we should be thankful and not take much more than that from life. I challenge you to stop and look at your life today. What do you have in life that is more than you need? You should try to find someone else who could use a blessing and pass on these things so they don't hinder you from loving God or others. So they don't get in the way of what really matters in life.

"Lord, please keep my eyes clear and focused on what is necessary in life. Help me to be able to tell the difference between real needs and pleasantries. Help me to not cling to too much, cluttering up my heart and focus. Help me to teach this lesson to my dear sweet children and not forget it. Help me to never get too comfortable in my daily living. I would rather life be hard and a struggle and be dirt poor; than to be rich and have everything to my heart's content"

Amen!!

A follow up on my HUGEST trial...

A week or so after the DHS lady closed our case...

So since I didn't get to sit through ANY of the seminars at the Home School Conference this year David was sweet and bought me the entire collection on MP3. I was listening through all of them one by one alphabetically and when I got the the "Gs" there was a sweet young mother talking about how precious the young years are. She sounded SO full of love and passion about her own children. SO serious about putting them first and trying so hard. I don't think I have ever heard someone put into words how I have always felt towards my own children... they are my flesh and blood and I don't take that lightly...

At the end of her seminar she mentioned that she had a blog, and I obviously haven't been blogging all last year... well I got on there and just got SWEPT away reading her entire blog in just a few short days!!! Let me tell you I was so so so very encouraged!!!! I though "even if I never meet this dear lady, I know now ... that there does exist mothers out there trying as hard as me (or harder) to raise there children for GOD!!! Silly but that there is hope of finding a wonderful wife for themselves one day, and wonderful friends for them for now!!!!

I realized... the whole picture became clear to me:
My heart had been struggling with motherhood and feeling a huge loss and overwhelming sense of NO PURPOSE OR HOPE.... God brought me through the valley to show me that I just need to obey him and trust that he has a plan.... then I came out the other side to see this BEAUTIFUL meadow full of happy Godly girls: which represented hope to me. I am not the only mother out there with these trials. She has them too, and she is fighting off the world and doing a WONDERFUL job at raising these lovely little ladies!!! God does have a beautiful plan! He does take care of us! He knows what is best... we just need to trust him and follow him, even if it is through a valley!!!

Thank you Father for that lesson. Thank you for not giving up on me! Thank you for not letting me wander or get lost, for calling to me and directing my path! You know what is best for me and my family! You alone! Thank you! Please keep calling to me and never leave me, I need you if I'm going to do a good job with these children! Amen!!! Thank you Lord!!!

My HUGEST trial of my life...

It has taken me a while to absorb what happened a month ago... and realize that everything is fine now, nothing bad is going to happen. I finally feel like I can move on.

I was at home with my children, going about my normal day when someone knocked at the door. There was a woman from DHS here asking to come in to talk to me and my children, there had been a phone call Monday afternoon filing a claim of abuse on my behalf, and she needed to investigate. I immediately knew who it was who had filled the false claim and tried to explain to the woman what was going on. She simply informed me that she had the right to pursed the investigation simply because that phone call was made, regardless if it was true or false.

She asked me a few questions about my parenting. I did not lie. I told her that I spanked my children with a wooden spoon. She was horrified. So stupidly I became defensive and tried to explain myself "hands are for loving not hitting". To which SHE became defensive because that is what her ENTIRE discipline approach is based on "don't use anything but your hands to discipline your child"

So being more and more flustered and attacked I made a royal mess out of everything. She spoke to the children alone and when I came back in the house she was writing her case against me. She had plenty of things written down: I let the children ride their bikes without helmets (on our driveway and back patio??? puleeeezzzzz) I LET them cut themselves on Davids razor (acted as if I actually did the cutting myself) etc etc...

Thank you Lord for sending David home on his lunch break!!!! He is so good with people... he wasn't flustered at all. This was right up his line of business. HE is the one who usually gets referalls FROM the DHS workers. HE is the one who FIXES these truely abussive parents, teaching them classes, evaluating them and such... That woman had quite the nerve talking to him the way she did. But he gave me the look of "just be quiet Amanda" so I pretty much did, tried anyway...

She explained that from the feel she got already of our family, she wanted to check the children for bruises. So the three of us took each child one by one aside and quickly looked them over. On the first child, she snapped at me "SEE THERE IS A BRUISE RIGHT THERE ALREADY!!!" and I calmly walked over to him, licked my thumb wiped the scar and stretched the skin replied, "that is a scar... its been there a month... it will still be there a month from now." To which she calmed down slightly. Thank you God there weren't anymore bruises anywhere on them, I can just imagine what she would have done! My children are BOYS! they usually have a bruise somewhere.. Isaiah has one on his forehead right now for goodness sakes.

She excused her self and said she would be returning....

This is my point.... My mind FILLED TO OVERFLOWING with fear of loosing them. David said calmly after she left that by her reaction and the falsness she was writing down he was PRETTY sure I would be arested if not both of us!!!!

We had planned on going camping that weekend, but David said if I wanted to leave right then and there he was fine with that (wednesday evening) So my sweet sister and I packed up real quick and headed out. I had a battle going on in my heart... IT WAS JUST ME FACING THE EVIL, AND GOD WAS WATCHING.... where was I going to put my heart?

I was angry at first, denying, defensive, HATRED, pure hatred at the person who had made this claim. The only thing that soothed that angry from striking them back was David's orderd to exclued them from our lives, that they are not to be anywhere near me or my children again.

Then I clamed down... I realized God was still there and that if I was angry and defensive I must be guilty of something. So I dug down and realized that I was guilty indeed, guilty of not doing my BEST with my children. Not spending enough time with them, getting snappy and frusterated at them, lowering my standards of being a wonderful mother... I have sacraficed SO much of my life and put it into my children. I fight a DAILY battle at keeping my house PURE of the world, protecting my children... That recently I had been feeling like I was THE ONLY ONE ALIVE WHO WAS DOING THIS.!!!!!! THE ONLY ONE!!!!!! I felt so lost and alone.... silly but I was looking out on this world thinking, if I put all this time, love, energy into my children, raise them into WONDERFUL God fearing men... they are going to be SO SO SO VERY LONELY.... there are no good boys left out there whom they can be friends with, there are no good little girls out there whom they can choose a wife... WHY AM I DOING THIS.. and I felt like I was about to give up and slack hard at my job...

... instead God was trying to tell me something. That I am unique, set apart from the world. I am not anything like anybody who is NORMAL or REGULAR. My boys have a LOT going for them! I feel like God was telling me they were EXTRA SPECIAL, that he has a plan for them. He wanted to used them for something HUGE in this world. He needed me to do my job, do it well and do it with every last drop of blood in me. HE NEEDED ME. So I concluded that this lady did not come to take my children from me, really what was happening was Satan was trying to hurt me or my children through an angry person. But God was watching and waiting for my heart to learn a lesson, to "get in the right place" and he was going to protect me. So I did what I believe he wanted me to do, " I told God I was going to keep on to the end". That I hadn't come this far for nothing. I wanted to see the end result, the reward he had in store, the wonderful plans he has for my boys...

A short while later, David got ahold of the lady, she came to our house for the "follow up." It was a completely different story. She was very nice and polite. Informed us that she usually doesn't sit down with people to give them there results but she wanted to with us. To let us know that she was closing the case as "UNFOUNDED" !!!!!!! I couldn't believe it. I went from thinking I was going to get locked up for nothing to she found nothing at all!!! And she was being realllllly nice. She just wanted to let us know "I think you have some really great children, and I want to let you know that you need to try harder to love them" was the jest of the message I got. And I was like (that's exactly what I thought you were trying to say all along God, thank you for this confirmation, I needed to hear it out loud to make sure I wasn't making this whole thing up )

That's it case closed.... Love the boys, take care of them, try my hardest every moment of every day, drenching them in smiles and adoration.... I'm glad I took the time to write this so I can remain focused!!! Amen!!!

PS I have been involved with HELPING DHS for a few years and they are usually helpful people with good intentions. I meant no disrespect to the woman in this article, I felt like it only had to do with my heart only and no one else's, she was just the tool that was used to teach me this lesson...

Trials

I woke early this morning, and when I do that despite being up till midnight, I usually have a sense that God wants to spend some time with me. I'll try to keep this a sumary and not drag it out too long.

I haven't fasted in almost two years. A few days ago I had a strong desire to. I know I'm still nursing and shouldn't be fasting, but its towards the end so I wasn't too worried. I went two full days on water only and was doing fine, and I thought it was much easier than I thought it should be. However, I went about it all wrong though. I remained focused on the physical aspects, cleansing, health, how long can I go... and forgot that the entire reason should have been to spend more time with God, focusing on my relationship with Him. To fellowship and commune with him when my soul has subdued my flesh and is in control for a time. To have a clearer mind when facing upcoming temptations, trials and hardship... so I failed. I'm sorry Father, I should have been doing it for you.

Now I know why it was so easy. I feel God was trying to help me stick to it longer. I felt like God was trying to help me grow my spiritual muscles and my faith, to prepare me for something; however, I let the little thoughts creap into my mind, "did God really want you to fast" , "you are a nursing mother" "what good are you doing". Thus ending my fast much too short to benifit from it what I believe God had intended. Im positive it was God, why else would I have told David about the fast? I had suggested to him that we do one together, I felt there was a need for me to do one, but WITH David. I dont usually tell him what to do, but I had a thought and that it was for BOTH of us to do together. I didn't know how long I needed to fast but knew when it was time to end I knew I would know... now look what happened...

First I woke up at 5:00am, the 48 hour mark with bad symptoms, shakes, throwing up n dry heaving, massive stomach pain, head ache, FEAR that I was starving to death, that I was going to end up in the hospital for doing something so stupid while nursing... so I imedeately sat down and gorged myself on two bowls of cheerios!! And when back to bed. Shortly therof I had horrible stomach pain, like the flu! shouldnt have eaten those cheerios. I realized that i ended my fast with the wrong choice of food, so i quickly looked on the internet for "how to end a fast". I immediately came across an article going into details about the WHY to fast in the first place: for God. and so I realized my error. He wanted me to do this for a reason, I didn't know why but I failed. I should have been praying and praising and reading the bible and meditating on HIM. That's what went wrong. Sure enough at the end of the article it said the first things to eat after a fast, so I did the boiled tomato thing and I felt much better IMEDEATELY. just needed some acid in my stomach and humbling and remorse in my heart. That night at 3:00am i woke up with my "left side" empty but the "right one" engorged! painful hot red swollen, so i imedeately went to the bathroom and expressed as much as I could, and took my massive herbal regimen. Another reminder that I should be praying. but i didn't listen. a few days go by...

We got some news yesterday... potentially VERY BAD news. Now I know why all of this was happening. God was trying to get my heart close to his, very very close. I believe EVERY situation in life God is watching us for our reaction, and that is THE MOST IMPORTANT PART. How are we going to respond? This same thought was laid upon my heart just a little while ago. Where is my heart right now? What should my thoughts and responce be?

We had somthing like this happend a few months ago, I'll write about that next post...

David took me in our bedroom and told be briefly what was going on, and let me tell you, my heart was not ready for that news. I have heard of a saying that "your past can come back to get you" well that is sorta what happened. My mind when crazy and thought all the worst case scenarios and what am I going to do if anything happened? I was immediately filled with fear... not the peace that could have been there. It was then that this whole situation came into perspective.... Ahah! Now I know why you wanted me to fast God, now I know why you wanted me to draw near to you, now I know what I was supposed to be praying for "David" in this trial we are about to face... Last month I felt like it was ME specifically God was watching when we were facing that last HUGE HORRIBLE TRIAL!!! This time it feels like God is watching David. I dont feel like it has anything to do with me, except I am supposed to be loving him and supporting him and praying for him. God just wants to know where David's heart is... just testing him, watching his actions. Either way I know I will be fine, that the most important thing right now is to draw closer to God and hide under his umbrella of protection...

I love you David. I wish I could make everything bad in this world dissapear, but instead I'm going to pray: "Lord that thy will be done, not mine... you know what is best for David, better than I do. If he needs to learn a lesson, or grow spiritually... you know what he needs, just let me know what to do to help"

In the wee hours of the morning, I will praise you oh Lord!!!

In the wee hours of the morning, I will praise you oh Lord!!!

I dropped a friend off at the airport Tuesday morning (sorry a few Tuesdays ago... I just could never get my words on here right). I was up by 2:45, we left at 3:30 AM. I brought along Victoria, so just the two of us were driving home together. My first thought was
"Oh no! I forgot my itouch, I wont be able to listen to anything wonderful and inspiring about God on the drive home..." to which I immediately thought, "Great, my better idea is spending this time fellow shipping with you God" And so began the BEST hour of my life...

I began by talking and singing and praising my Lord. I told him about everything my mind was pondering lately. I cried. I was having a really deep heart to heart with him. I told him, "Lord I can hardly see the road right now, I need you to take the wheel, otherwise Id better just pull over." And I'd have one message from Him after another. "Yes, I need him to take the wheel. In every aspect of life." Only He can drive perfectly, only He knows what we need.

Another thing He told me was, "That just like a farmer plants a cover crop for the winter, to protect the soil from the weather, but every spring he plows under that crop. He doesn't do it to waste the good grass, the grass had its purpose but now it is not needed for anything except adding nutrients to the soil for the REAL crop the farmer has planned" SO IS YOUR LIFE AMANDA. All my efforts and good works are just like the cover crop, going to get "plowed under" by God. At first it might seem like they are going to waste, but really its just that I need to see that God has something else intended for my life, he wants me to be fruitful and produce a crop for him to harvest one day. So I must not sorrow right now at this time in my life where it feels like God is plowing under my ENTIRE LIFE. All my child hood, youth, all these years as a wife and mother, and it feels like God is just now got me in the right season to start PLANTING, so he needs to plow my thoughts, heart and soul , EVERYTHING, in preparation for planting season.

I told him, I understand, I see the whole picture... I'm willing Lord to do whatever it takes, follow wherever you lead. Planting time is here,... so plow under everything, both good and bad. Thus turning EVERYTHING I have ever done and thought into the ENERGY/ food to actually live the life he calls me to do, what he wants me to be. Plow it under LORD:
the wasted time, the fears and anxiety, the slothfulness, the bitterness, the jealousy, the selfishness, unkind unloving heart of mine, the stress, the neglected relationships...

Create in me a new heart... help me to love unconditionally, help me to be a wonderful time manager and always be on time and make the most of all my time, help me to not be afraid or anxious or stressed, give me peace, please, help me to be thankful and joyful in every precious thing you have given me. Help me to focus on what is important in this life: the relationships around me. The example that I set for every watching eye. What do I reflect of you Lord? Is it what you want? I want to be a light that is pleasing to you! That you want me to be.

I saw the sun starting to peak over the mountains to my left and I prayed, "Lord please keep the sun from rising, just a little longer... I don't want this moment to end." I eventually made it home just fine, I still feel like that was the best hour of my entire life... and I told God, "If every morning was going to be this amazing I would have no problem getting up early to spend with him..." so here I begin to truly try putting him first: physically, really truly, getting up and spending my first hour with him each morning: I hope to keep you slightly update...

Just trust…

Just trust…

We just need to trust him. Know that he really does love us more than we could ever love ourselves!!!! That he already fixed our greatest problem for us. He paid the price for us. There is nothing harder for us to ask of Him than what he has already done. Without our even needing to ask, he die for us because he knew he would lose us if he didn’t. This is a stronger romance story than ANY thing you will ever hear. You and I, all of us, marching up to Calvary’s cross sentences to death. We must pay the price for all the lying, stealing, deceit, tantrums, slander, gossip, malice, adultery, coveting, murdering, hatred, jealously, selfish self centeredness, pride…. But wait, out of the cloud comes forth our love. Running to our side pleading with us to just hand over our cross to him, because he already paid for us!!!! He wants to take our cross and burn it with all the others he already saved. He wants to swoop us up in his arms and carry us away to his mansion. He wants to hold and comfort us.

God is Good!!!

God is Good!!!

God is SOOOO good!!! When you have something bad happen, or feel pain, or even see something AWFUL!!!! Our responds should not be anger, disgust, or defense but rather.... STOP and take a LONG look at the situation; there is ALWAYS A BLESSING or something good that can come out of it. Our responds should be: thank you God for showing me that, thank you for teaching me that, thank you for caring enough about me to chasten me. When you have a thankful heart, his love replaces the pain with JOY (not happiness) but real pure JOY, overflowing JOY, AMAZING GOD-GIVEN JOY.
THANK YOU GOD!!!!

Not a chance we happened but a witha plan we were created

I was just thinking about the lesson I will be giving the boys in the morning. We have been having so much fun with school now that we have our new books. We start off with a lesson out of "little people" program for our devotions. Every night before I pre-read the next mornings lesson, and as I was reading this one I just thought how wonderful it is that my children and I are so blessed to be able to study and freely learn about our creator!!!

So this lesson has an illustration I am supposed to give, take 10 coins write the number 1 - 10 one them, lay them out in order so the children can see that I want them in this exact order. Then take them and toss them in the air and see where they land. NOT in the exact order that I wanted, do this a few times so they see that it is highly unlikely for them to land exactly in order, probably impossible.

This leads to a further discussion about how creation/ everything is so perfectly made exactly right with every detail. How slim the odds are that anything could line up exactly right in creation... LET ALONE the fact that EVERYTHING is lined up perfectly!!!! our God is so amazing.

It was so fun last night, I went to a fiesta in Independance and when it got late I took my children in the car and let them fall asleep a little earlier than David wanted to leave. The three little ones were fast asleep, and just Alex and I were awake watching the stars, when we both looked up at the sky at the same time and saw a shooting star and both looked at each other and saw it at the same time. I know he will remember that forever. A memory of something so fun to see as a child. I dont think I ever saw one before until this summer. Another thing I can bring up to discuss in the morning. How amazing everything is, and let them ponder on that...

"Thank you Father for every precious, beautiful thing you have made that my eye get the pleasure to look upon :) "

Poor Mint Plant... Poor Boys...

Early this morning while I was setting the times on all my sprinklers, I was looking around my back yard and thanking God for each and every small little blessing he has recently given me.

My three precious little chicken AND the material to build their little yard AND that at least two are already laying.

The rabbit that Marcus has a pet to take care of and feels included when his brothers are doing their chores AND that it is making me a beautiful big fertalized area where my garden will be next year. For my newly installed sprinkler system that I put in all by myself!!!! That I finally got it right and that it covers every square inch of my back yard including all flower beds :) I am thrilled to peices about that one....

As I was admiring God for all the little things in life that make me smile, I noticed my newly transplanted mint plants... :( not doing so well. In fact they were flat out wilting and probably done for. I wanted to save them from the chickens so I moved them from the chicken pen to a small flower bed that receives NO sunlight, thus no ability to draw up its necessary water, hence why it is not going to make it.

I began to reflex on that and thought that (here is a little honesty so don't judge me too hard please ) I feel like I have kept my boys from the world with good intentions, to protect and shelter them. (like protecting the mint from the chickens) But in moving them to the protection of my home only I feel like they don't get enough sunshine (the poor mint being in the shade) I guess it feels like I need to smile at them a lot more, laugh with them, tickle, and just PLAY with them. I have begun to let life sweep me along again. I have also forgotten to include friends for them to play with, grow up with, and safely learn that there does exist other like minded, christian, "safe" friends which we can let our guard down around. My boys seem like life is just a bit boring, or dull or missing that spice and joy that friends put in it. (the mint needed to be planted in full sun in another area of the yard)

I want to make their life one to look back on and say "we had a BLAST together" even if it is doing the chores, do it all in fun :) I want them to not just live, I want them to THRIVE!!!!!

Musings

Just thinking about stuff... there is so much going on in this world that is so confusing. Mainly Christians, how have they been so blindly lead astray on so many topics of important like a literal creation which took 6 literal 24hr periods of time called days... to which version of the bible is most accurate. Does this matter? I strongly believe it does. Its like a bunch of people go out to plant a garden and they are all trying to plant the same way, encountering the same weeds, etc... point is they all are experiencing the same gardening task... Some people dwadle around and slowly atempt to plant their seeds in the uncleared land... Some people start weeding out the little weeds and are making a slow attempt at it.. While the last group take back hoes and big machinery to their land and start clearing out the HUGE brush and trees by the burn pile full... I mean they mean business, they are going to plant a garden and they want the land cleared now... so they can start planting their seeds this spring.

This got me thinking and comparing this illustration to Christians who are so flaky about church they dont pray or read their bible, just sort of dwadle around church from time to time.. and the second is Christians who don't see the whole picture, they are just doing such little studying or discussion group stuff they don't know what they are really doing.. and the third group is REALLY rare.. they KNOW there is a spiritual battle going on right now, they want to know what is the truth and what they need to do to start LIVING the life TODAY, right now, not some time a few years from now... topic that are huge to me in Christianity are:

Literal Creation which took 6 days, earth being only about 6,000 years old
KJV being our only English version which we can trust in its entirety
Salvation, what does it take to get to heaven
Sins, when are we forgiven, what if you sin directly after you repent... will you then go to hell?
The end times, rapture, what are Christians to do in the end times... run to the mountains?
Birth control, abortion, family planning, children
Public schools system and evolution vs homeschooling
femininity and modesty and virtuous women of god
denominations and do they even matter as long as you are a christian?

I mean there is so much rattling around in this little brain, and then who can you turn to? who is there to ask questions to that would actually be of help and know the truth? I haven't found a single person who is ON THE PATH OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.... for whom I can ask my many questions of ponderings....

the sad thing to me is that whom ever we do trust around us believes such different things from us ... like hugely different... that how can we even agree on any part of God truth if we don't agree on the huge topics. plus should we even get together to talk to those loved ones arround us if we dissagree so drasticaly? wont we just harm our relatoinship? and offend each other? I'm worried about distancing ourselves rather than drawing each other closer together towards Christ....

.... just musing...

What lovely lips...

This is about gossip and controlling your tongue...
What lovely lips... I love this piece...

How do you talk? Is your voice loud, harsh, and unladylike? What types of words do you use in your every day vocabulary? Do you use gutter words, such as "zit," "shoot," "that sucks," etc.? The Bible is clear that we are not to have any
form of filthy communication:

Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee. –Proverbs 4:24

The tongue is a very hard thing to control:
Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of
iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with
meekness of wisdom. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For
where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be
intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
–James 3:3-18

Meekness

The Ornament of a Meek & Quiet Spirit

by Donna Martin

I have been a born again Christian for nearly 20 years, and I’ve studied the Bible and attended college level Bible courses, but I have never studied the meek and quiet spirit that scripture speaks of. When I found a book by Matthew Henry, a Puritan pastor, which was written in the late1600's on this very subject, I decided to read it. As I passed from chapter to chapter, I questioned myself of whether I had this spirit he spoke of. Scripture shows in 1 Peter 3:4 that God places great value in the ones that possess a meek and quiet spirit, so I hoped that together we can see where we stand in this gifting.

Meekness is spoken of as an adornment that is incorruptible. It is a softness of temper, gentleness, forbearance under provocation and injuries, void of passion, pride, and immoderate anger. Meekness enables us to control our own anger when we are provoked, and patiently bear the anger of others while not allowing it to excite anger or cause resentment in us. It is a fruit of the Holy Spirit in those Christians that are yielded to Him, and not brought about by self-effort. Meekness is more than the words we speak and the actions we display, it is the spirit behind those words and the intentions behind those actions. In some translations it is called self control. Meekness is the peaceful assurance that God is in control.

When someone possesses the ornament of quietness in spirit, they speak soothing words, they are a peacemaker, they pass up the temptation to be sharp and hurtful, and they deny the desire to be boastful and selfish. They are gentle and mild, patient and kind, and they are not argumentative, pushy, self assertive, unkind or rude. Quietness is the evenness, the composure, the rest of the soul, which speaks both the nature and the excellency of the grace of meekness. The greatest comfort and happiness of man is sometimes set forth by quietness (Matthew Henry).

In 1 Timothy 6:11 we are told to follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and meekness. I believe it takes seeking after the first five qualities in that verse before you begin to show the of meekness and quietness in our lives. If you continue to carry unforgiveness, bitterness, anger, and resentment in your life, then you will prevent the working of meekness and quietness. You will block the flow of the Holy Spirit, and the destructive spirit of the flesh will be what flows from your life. When you work through all these issues that are blocking the flow of the Spirit, you will then begin to see these gifts start to operate.

A changed life speaks loudly and clearly, and it is often the most effective way to influence your family members for Christ. In 1 Peter 3:3&4, Peter instructed Christian wives to develop inner beauty rather than being overly concerned with their appearance. This is because their husbands and families would be won by their love, rather than by their looks. This brings to mind what my husband says to me sometimes. He feels that the perfect woman is mute. Why? Because then he doesn’t have to hear their sharp words and their complaining. Of course he had me in mind when he said this, but it is the perfect example of how our words and actions affect the ones we love. I’m sure Peter felt that way when he said we should work on the inner man. What a jewel in our husband’s eyes we would be if only blessings flowed from our mouths, and not complaining, orders, or anger.

Please don’t take me wrong about spending time on our appearance, because our dress is a reflection of what is on the inside of us. But you can have your dress down to your ankles, cover your head, and speak with a sweet voice and still be a snake in the grass. Modest dress and quiet and gentle behavior may be a facade for a raging and boiling spirit. When the spirit is truly gentle, the behavior will reflect the reality. You will not need to grit-your-teeth with effort.

One thing that today’s woman has been told is to be assertive. Feminism has told women they need to push their way upward in the workplace with assertiveness, and unfortunately they have brought it home with them in a damaging way. It took many years of deprogramming after getting off of active duty military to learn not to be assertive and demanding with my husband. I nearly unraveled my marriage. I think assertiveness is good in some situations, but being quiet is probably better.

If you still aren’t certain whether you possess the spirit of meekness and quietness, ask your husband. It often takes years to bring to maturity. Pray that God will work in your life to cultivate a mantle of meekness and quietness. Praying and reading your Bible will not be the only thing that makes it manifest, but it is a start.

Meek: mild, humble, strength under control

Quiet: peaceable, knows how to remain quiet in contention

1 Peter 3:4

"But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”

James 1:21

"Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.”

Philippians 2:3

"Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.”

Psalm 22:26

"The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him:
your heart shall live for ever.”

Psalm 25:9

"The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.”

Psalm 37:11

"But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”

James 1:19

“Be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath.”

Proverbs 17:1

“Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife."

Ecclesiastes 4:6

“Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.”

Ecclesiastes 9:17

“The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

Covenant Responsibilities

And now a word from Mr. Gothard

Discern Covenant Responsibilities!

The leaders tore their clothes and fell on their faces with shock, grief, and fear. What should have been an easy military victory turned out to be a disastrous and humiliating defeat. Now their entire military campaign and the very survival of their nation was in jeopardy.

Then God spoke to Joshua: “… Get thee up, wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face? Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them …” (Joshua 7:10–11). The entire nation of Israel was defeated because they violated their covenant with God. But what did they do? “… They have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff. Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies … because they were accursed: neither will I [God] be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed thing from among you” (Joshua 7:10–12).

As it turned out, a man named Achan had secretly stolen forbidden items from the spoils of a previous battle and had hidden them under his tent. When his sin was exposed, confessed, and punished, the Lord once again gave victories to the nation of Israel. (See Joshua 7–8.)

Because the entire nation of Israel was in covenant with God and with each other, one man’s sin caused the whole nation to suffer.

What a deep and profound truth! God is a covenant-making God. He works through covenants with people and with nations. Because every believer is part of the Body of Christ, a covenant relationship exists between all Christians (see Romans 12:5). We are all members one of another (see Ephesians 4:25). When one member suffers, we all suffer (see I Corinthians 12:26). It is also true that when one believer sins, every other believer is affected.

This connection of members throughout the Body of Christ should be a somber message to all believers. “Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of a harlot? God forbid” (I Corinthians 6:15). God reinforces this spiritual bonding by comparing it to the marriage covenant. “What? know ye not that he which is joined to a harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit” (I Corinthians 6:16–17).

Before we come to the communion table, we must repent of sins that are against God and have affected every other believer.

One church that understands this vital concept has included a time for confession and asking each other for forgiveness prior to the communion service. When appropriate, sins that have been committed are confessed before the entire congregation. In one service, a man asked the congregation to forgive him for sinning in anger that week. Another asked forgiveness for immorality. Two young believers asked forgiveness of the other church members for the quarreling and fighting they had done during the past week. This cleansing process is consistent with the admonition of Scripture to “confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another …” (James 5:16).

Let’s realize the seriousness of our sin and the fact that it is not a “private matter.” Our secret sins affect every other member of the Body of Christ. If they are not confessed and forsaken, they will eventually result in carnal churches that are ineffective for the Lord.

The Devil’s Be-attitudes

The Devil’s Be-attitudes

• Blessed are those who are too tired, too busy, too distracted to spend an hour a week with their fellow Christians; they are my best workers.
• Blessed are those Christians who wait to be asked and expect to be thanked; I can use them.
• Blessed are the touchy. With a bit of luck they may stop going to church; they are my missionaries.
• Blessed are the troublemakers; they shall be called my children.
• Blessed are the complainers; I'm all ears to them.
• Blessed are they who are bored with the minister's mannerisms and mistakes; for they get nothing out of his sermons.
• Blessed is the church member who expects to be invited to his own church; for he is a part of the problem instead of the solution.
• Blessed are they who gossip; for they shall cause strife and divisions that please me.
• Blessed are they who are easily offended; for they will soon get angry and quit.
• Blessed are they who do not give their offering to carry on God's work; for they are my helpers.
• Blessed is he who professes to love God but hates his brother; for he shall be with me forever.
• Blessed are you who when you read this think it is about other people and not yourself; I'VE GOT YOU…..
